ECBA has a growing staff of highly qualified instructors. We make sure that each instructor has qualities that would make every customer at ECBA confident, secure and proud.
Each instructor knows the game, and how to teach it. On top of that, our staff is fun to be around! Educating athletes from all levels and playing abilities can be complex, so we choose our staff very carefully.

ECBA provides hitting, pitching, and fielding lessons for both baseball and softball athletes.
East Coast Baseball Academy is Charleston's premier site for baseball and softball training. It is a one of a kind, air-conditioned indoor baseball/softball facility.
We offer 15ft high batting cages with turf flooring, 2 HitTrax Simulators, 2 Hack Attack baseball pitching machines, 1 Spinball Baseball pitching machine,1 Spinball Softball pitching machine, a separate pitching area with regulation pitching mound as well as two plyowalls for weighted ball training. All cages have tees, L-screens, balls and everything you may need to work on your game.
Private one-on-one training is available from some of Charleston's finest trainers, including former major and minor league players, former and current college players and coaches,
active high school coaches and special guests.

Owner / Lead Hitting Instructor
Randy played high school baseball in Sinclairville, NY at Cassadaga Valley Central School. He went on to play at Jamestown Community College, where he led his team to the NJCAA Regionals in 1999. Carlson left his mark on the record books, ranking first in career walks, first in career triples, fifth in career at bats, ninth in career runs scored and 10th in career hits. After attending Jamestown CC, he went on to play at Lander University in South Carolina. While at Lander his team was nationally ranked as high as ninth in 2001. The same team finished with a school record 33 wins, including a season-high 18 Peach Belt Conference victories.
After playing at Lander, Randy went on to coach at Lander University where he was the hitting coach and in charge of the catchers. He coached at Lander for 3 years before moving on to The Citadel where he coached for 6 seasons and helped guide the Bulldogs to the 2010 Southern Conference Championship. In his first three season at the Military College of South Carolina, Randy assisted with both hitters and pitchers and was the catching coach. He was then named hitting coach for his final three seasons and helped guide Bulldog hitters to one of the most prolific offensive seasons in school history in 2009. Carlson has led over 20 players to move on to the professional ranks during his coaching career.
Baseball Pitching Instructor
England brings an impressive resume to East Coast Baseball Academy. The Nashville, TN native attended Walters State CC, one of the top junior college programs in the country, where he was named conference Pitcher of the Year in 2012 as well as First-Team All-Conference. The hard-throwing left-hander transferred to the University of Tennessee and eventually finished his collegiate career at Lindsey Wilson College in Kentucky.
Smith went on to play professionally for the Glacier Outlaws of the Mount Ranier Professional Baseball League before relocating to Charleston, SC.
Baseball Pitching Instructor
Ben Wereski was born and raised in Buffalo, NY and is currently playing professionally with the Lincoln Saltdogs of the American Association.
Ben started his collegiate career at Columbia University, where he was named Honorable Mention All-Ivy League in 2019. He graduated from Columbia in 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Business.
Due to injury, Ben was forced to sit out during the shortened 2020 season. This afforded him the opportunity to graduate-transfer to Rutgers University. During the 2021 season, he started all 13 weekends on the mound and finished with a 3.67 ERA. Ben led the Big Ten Conference with a 0.99 WHIP and a 1.3 BB/9, and was second with a 5:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Ben has experience giving lessons both individually and in group settings. During college, he worked several baseball camps and clinics at which he helped younger players better understand their approach to the game. He also volunteers individual lessons when he is back home in Buffalo…

Hitting, Pitching, INF/OF/C Instructor
Stephen “Coach Red” Evans is a native from Vicksburg, MS. He attended Saint Aloysius High School. There, he led them to back to back state championships in 2009 and 2010. Coach Red was also Player of the Year for the state of Mississippi in 2010. After that, he signed with Hinds Community College. Coach Red played one season there before finishing up his playing career at Ole Miss.
After college, Coach Red jumped straight into Coaching. He was the Head Coach at Canton High school, and also served as an assistant coach at Ridgeland High School and Warren Central High School. During his coaching career, Coach Red has coached over 30 players that have gone on to play at the next level.
Coach Red joined us in 2020. He has coached multiple age groups for our ECBA travel teams. He also runs our Developmental Program and helps with summer camps. Coach Red loves being around this great game and all that it has to give back. He has been coached by some great coaches and hopes to return the favor to the next generation. Coach Red takes pride in doing the little things right. Dominate the Day!
Hitting, INF/OF/C Instructor
Tag Montague is currently an assistant baseball coach at The Citadel. He has over 20 years of experience as a college coach with stops at Virginia Wesleyan, George Mason, Richmond, Old Dominion, Marist and George Washington. He helped lead the 2014 GMU team to the Atlantic 10 Championship and a berth in the Rice Regional. While at Mason Tag coached 10 players that went on to play professional baseball, including the highest drafted player in the history of the program (Logan Driscoll-2nd Round) and the third highest draft pick in program history (Zach Mort-8th Round).
During his coaching career Tag coached for many outstanding coaches that combined have over 4600 collegiate wins. He also coached over 50 players that went on to professional baseball.
Catching and Hitting Instructor
Tyler Beck graduated from Ohio University in 2015, where he played Division I baseball as a catcher. Tyler grew up in Avon Lake, Ohio and attended Avon Lake high school, where he was a two-time first-team Mizuno All-Ohio baseball player. He was also named the Division I Lorain County player of the year in 2011 and was named first team to the All-Northeast-Ohio, All-Lorain County, and All-Southwestern Conference teams during his junior and senior years. Tyler set the Avon Lake high school batting average record and was recruited by several colleges, including Ohio University, the University of Michigan, Miami University, the University of Toledo, Cleveland State University, and Wayne State University.
During high school and college, Tyler was trained by several professional athletes, including Joe Charboneau, Neal French, Clint Nageotte, and Johnny Damon. All of these players had a positive influence on his life and helped to advance his game to the next level. Prior to moving to Charleston, Tyler served as a catching and hitting instructor at T3 Performance in Cleveland, Ohio.
After graduating from Ohio University, Tyler moved to Charleston to pursue an M.D./Ph.D dual degree at the Medical University of South Carolina. Tyler believes that student-athletes must be students first, and that the sport of baseball can teach you a lot about what it takes to be successful in the classroom and in all aspects of life. “Not only do I have a deep understanding of the game of baseball, but I also understand what it takes to be a successful student-athlete. Baseball has taught me a variety of important life lessons including structure, teamwork, mental endurance, and how to cope with failure. These are lessons that I hope to pass on to those whom I train.”
